Working at Orchard Corset

History

To fully understand the evolution of OrchardCorset.com, we need to step back in time to 1940’s New York City. Our story begins with Isaiah Bergstein, who came to America shortly after WW2 as a Holocaust survivor of Treblinka where he met Magda, another holocaust survivor of Auschwitz.  Both Isaiah and Magda were lone survivors from very large families.

1946 they married and Isaiah went to work as a pattern maker in a corset factory in New York.  In 1968, Isaiah opened Orchard Corset on the famous Orchard Street in the lower east side of Manhattan at a time when corsets were very much in demand.  As corset sales diminished, Isaiah began to add to the product line, introducing bras, girdles and shapewear to the store.  Magda was well known throughout all of New York as the finest bra fitter in Manhattan.  She could tell any woman who walked through the door her correct bra size with a three second glance.  Later, because of popular television reality shows, she became known as the "bra whisperer".

After the untimely death of Isaiah, Magda brought on her only son, Ralph to help her in the store, and shortly after her daughter in law Peggy.  Sadly, Magda passed away in 2012 but Magda had diligently passed her bra fitting skills on to Peggy, and she is now just as skilled as her mother in law was, having now 28 years of experience, Peggy is now literally a second generation "bra whisperer".

In 1994, Orchard Corset had its first presence on the internet with a very limited website displaying product and a phone number to call. In 1995 Ralph and Peggy met a couple from Washington state, Jeff and Leanna Kurpuis, who had a shapewear and bra website that sold online, something that Orchard Corset had yet to venture into.  Ralph and Jeff not only did a lot of business to business together, but hit it off personally.  After several meetings, they finally decided to merge their businesses together.  Ralph would run the store, and Jeff would manage web sales for both companies and a west coast warehouse near his home in Wenatchee, WA.  This became a reality in early 2001.

Since then, Ralph, Peggy, Jeff and Leanna have worked together to expand the business from a corset store on Orchard Street to a worldwide retailer in authentic corsets, superior shapewear and quality foundations to meet the needs of today’s women. Orchard Corset offers beautiful, durable authentic steel boned corsets at affordable prices. We continue to look for the highest quality products from vintage and compression shapewear, bras, bustiers, hosiery and much more at the best possible prices for our customers.

Our mission at Orchard Corset is to combine quality products with superior customer service. Ralph, Peggy, Jeff and Leanna along with their dedicated staff are devoted to making your shopping experience at Orchard Corset enjoyable, easy and safe.
